The volume includes, among other works, a translation of Shakespeare’s comedy *Much Ado About Nothing* by Apollo Korzeniowski (1820–1869), a poet, playwright, and independence activist—and the father of Joseph Conrad. Korzeniowski translated Shakespeare while in exile in Russia, where he was sent after his arrest in 1861; Conrad himself later mentioned “Much Ado About Nothing” among his father’s translations of Shakespeare. Romuald Podbereski’s journal sought to bring together the academic and literary circles that had become scattered following the fall of the January Uprising.

Provenance: On the title page, there is a stamp reading “Biblioteka BR. Molsdorf” and a signature reading “From the Collection of S. Molsdorf”; on the half-title page, there is a stamp reading “Tadeusz Adamczyk.”

A rare volume featuring a translation by Apollo Korzeniowski, of interest to scholars of the Polish reception of Shakespeare and to Conrad enthusiasts.

An item from the 19th Polish Antiquarian Book Auction.
