About this copy

Volume: 246, [2] pp.

Size: 20 cm.

Binding: Original period half-cloth binding.

“What to Read?” is a guide to fiction that evaluates books from the perspective of Catholic morality, intended primarily for educators and young people. Father Marian Pirożyński gave harsh reviews of, among others, Żeromski’s *The History of Sin*, Nałkowska’s *The Romance of Teresa Hennert*, and Prus’s *Pharaoh*, as well as foreign authors such as Balzac, Goethe, Voltaire, and Zola. The book sparked a heated controversy in the press, to which the author responded with a separate rebuttal.

An interesting account of ideological disputes and the reading culture of the Second Polish Republic.

Provenance: A former handwritten note by the owner on the title page.

The block is intact; all pages are present. The canvas cover is slightly worn at the edges and dusty. The paper shows natural signs of aging.

An item from the 19th Polish Antiquarian Book Auction.
