Description

This is the first edition of the dictionary written by Zygmunt Węclewski (1824-1887)-an outstanding classical philologist, Hellenist, lexicographer and university professor, one of the most prominent Polish philologists of the 19th century . The dictionary was published in 1851 in Poznań by A. Poplinski and was intended for pupils and students beginning their study of Latin .

Wêclewski, a graduate of the University of Wroclaw and a PhD from the University of Halle, worked for many years as a teacher at the Gymnasium of St. Mary Magdalene in Poznañ, and later as a professor at the Warsaw High School and the Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv, where he served as dean and rector .

The dictionary contains translations of words and phrases found in the works of classical Roman authors such as Cicero, Virgil, Ovid and others, whose works were widely read in grammar schools . The publication is an extremely valuable resource for historians of education, classical philologists and collectors of 19th-century scholarly prints.
