Description

This is the first edition of a monograph dedicated to one of the most prominent Polish industrialists, social and political activists of the 19th century – Hipolit Cegielski (1813-1868). The publication was published in 1947 in Poznań by the Academic Bookshop as volume III of the series “Poznań Historical Library”.

The author of the book is Zdzislaw Grot (1903-1988) – an outstanding historian, professor at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, researcher of the history of Wielkopolska and the national movement. His monograph on Cegielski, based on a solid source search and archival documents, remains to this day the basic biographical study of this figure.

Hipolit Cegielski was not only the founder of the famous Poznan industrial plants (H. Cegielski – Poznañ S.A.), which to this day are a symbol of Wielkopolska entrepreneurship, but also an outstanding classical philologist, publicist, member of the Prussian Sejm and national activist fighting for the rights of Poles in the Prussian partition. Grot’s book depicts his versatile activities – from his scientific and pedagogical work, to developing Polish industry, to fighting for the Polish language in schools and offices.
