About this copy

Nuremberg; Lugduni 1522, Koberger; Sacon

36 cm, [14], CCCXIII [CCCXVII], [26] pp. — complete.

The title page is damaged; the missing sections have been replaced with new paper featuring reprinted graphic elements. There are signs of moisture on the top margin throughout the entire block. Otherwise, the copy is in very good condition.

A large-format, rare Bible with concordances to the Old and New Testaments and to the church canons, featuring numerous textual variants marked in the margins. The work has been supplemented with concordances based on the writings of Josephus (“Antiquitates Judaicae” and “Bellum Judaicum”).

The book was printed in Lyon by Jacques Sacon on behalf of the Nuremberg-based Koberger company, founded by Anton Koberger (d. 1513), one of the most distinguished printers and publishers of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The book is a powerful testament to the humanist culture of the book and the development of critical biblical exegesis—it combines medieval tradition with the modern method of working with the text.
