Henryk Siemiradzki (1843–1902) was one of the most famous European painters of his time; his grand historical and classical canvases, led by *Nero’s Torches*, were admired from St. Petersburg to Rome. After the artist’s death, the sculptor and medalist Stanisław Roman Lewandowski compiled a monograph on him, published by Gebethner and Wolff in folio format. It contains 10 heliogravure plates, 2 color plates with reproductions of oil sketches, and 93 reproductions in the text. Heliogravure made it possible to capture the subtle tonal transitions in the paintings.

There is an ownership stamp on the title page. The book has a period half-cloth binding with signs of wear.
