Description

An illustrated edition of the classic plays of the English playwright, prepared under the editorship of Jozef Ignacy Kraszewski. Published in three volumes, it contains Shakespeare’s most important plays translated into Polish and enriched with numerous illustrations, emphasizing the representative character of the edition. Kraszewski took care of the careful editing of the whole and provided the works with an introduction, giving the publication a high editorial level.

This is the first collective edition of Shakespeare’s works in Poland, covering a wide range of works – from comedies to tragedies – presenting the full spectrum of the author’s genius. The edition has significant historical and literary significance as a testimony to the reception of English literature in Polish culture of the 19th century and to the editorial activity of one of the most outstanding Polish writers of the era.
