Description

We present the first post-war edition of the novel ” Men Like Gods” (titled Men Like Gods) by Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) – an outstanding British writer, one of the forerunners of science fiction, author of such masterpieces as “The Time Machine”, “War of the Worlds” and “The Invisible Man”. The book was published in 1959 in Warsaw by the State Publishing Institute (PIW) in the prestigious “Novels of the 20th Century” series.

“Men Like Gods” is a utopian novel by Wells, first published in 1923. In their journey through an alternate reality, a group of Wells’ English contemporaries arrive in a mysterious land – a utopian paradise where technology has gone hand in hand with the refinement of customs, and society has achieved perfection and harmony. Unfortunately, newcomers from “our” world, full of fears, suspicions and conflicts, are unable to find their way in this ideal universe, and their appearance brings with it disastrous consequences. The novel is not only a passionate adventure, but also an insightful satire on the flaws of human civilization of the early 20th century. The book’s circulation was 30,253 copies.

Herbert George Wells, often referred to as the “father of science fiction,” was not only a writer, but also an avid croquet player and social activist, who in his works created both visions of the decline of humanity and optimistic images of the future. This novel is an expression of his belief in the possibility of building a better world based on knowledge, cooperation and peace.

This is the first post-war edition – the absolute first printing of this novel in Polish after World War II, belonging to the PIW “Novels of the Twentieth Century” series sought after by collectors. The presented copy is clean and preserved in very good condition. It is a must-have for a collector of science fiction literature, a lover of Wells’ work and a bibliophile looking for a representative edition of one of the most important utopian works of the 20th century.
