“We Will Shake the Earth from Its Foundations” (“És mégis mozog a föld,” 1872), whose title alludes to Galileo’s words “and yet it moves,” transports the reader to early 19th-century Hungary. It tells the story of a young poet and artist against the backdrop of a burgeoning national consciousness and the struggle against Austrian bureaucracy. Mór Jókai, himself a politician and participant in the 1848 revolution, was very popular in Poland in the late 19th century; Aleksandra Callier translated several of his novels.

A set of four volumes in matching period bindings.

The blocks of all volumes are intact (in Volume I, the title page is loose, with a small loss of blank margin). The pages are free of tears and stains, with slight yellowing. The bindings show slight scratches on the leather and scuffing on the edges.

An item from the 19th Polish Antiquarian Book Auction.
