Description

This is the first edition of one of the most important monographs on the January Uprising, published in 1913 on the fiftieth anniversary of the outbreak of the uprising. The author is Jozef Dabrowski (1876-1926), a lawyer, publicist, social activist and colonel of the Judicial Corps of the Polish Army, who published several historical and journalistic works under the pseudonym J. Grabiec .

The purpose of the work was, as the author wrote in the preface, “to restore to this period, which he considers one of the most beautiful in post-partition history, a good and reliably deserved fame, so often tarnished by the uncritical public” . The work reveals the genesis, course of the fighting and the political and international background of the uprising, based on reliable source research and the accounts of the participants .

The publication impresses with its wealth of iconographic material. It contains numerous illustrations and photographs in the text, color reproductions on separate boards, and at the end – a fold-out, colored “Map of the Kingdom of Poland showing the places of battles, assaults and skirmishes fought in the uprising of 1863/4.” . Reproductions of drawings by Artur Grottger have been placed on the plywood panels .
