About this copy

Size: 25 cm.

Volume: 49 pages, with illustrations and redrawings of coats of arms.

Binding: Secondary binding, period or later, cloth-bound.

Franciszek Kamocki describes “heraldic oddities”—that is, errors, anomalies, and distortions in coat-of-arms illustrations—which have become established in Polish armorials over the centuries. Drawing on old seals and documents, he points out errors made by the publishers of armorials—including Paprocki and Niesiecki—such as the use of the same woodcut blocks for different coats of arms, which caused their individual crests to become indistinguishable. The dissertation, published at the author’s own expense, is still cited in heraldic literature today.

A must-have for heraldists, sigillographers, and collectors of genealogical works.

The pages are in good condition, clean, with no foxing or stains. The cloth binding is in very good condition; the spine is sturdy, with minor signs of wear along the edges.

An item from the 19th Polish Antiquarian Book Auction.
