Description

This is the first edition of a fundamental work of linguistics by Antoni Malecki (1821-1913) – an outstanding philologist, professor at the Jagiellonian University, rector of the university, researcher of Polish language and literature, one of the founders of modern Polish linguistics. The publication was published in Lviv in 1879 by the author and his friends, and was rebound at the Printing House of the National Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Ossolinskis.

Małecki’s work is a breakthrough in Polish linguistics – the author used the methods of historical-comparative linguistics, which were just entering Polish science . In Volume I he discussed the voicing (phonetics) of the Polish language, in Volume II – inflection (word variety) and word structure (word formation). The work was based on a wide base of material, including not only Old Polish texts, but also folk dialects and comparisons with other Slavic languages.

Małecki, a student of Jerzy Samuel Bandtki and teacher of Jan Baudouin de Courtenay, among others, was one of the most prominent Polish linguists of the 19th century, and his “Gramatyka” served as a basic academic textbook for decades. The publication is an invaluable resource for language historians, Polish language researchers and collectors of 19th-century scholarly prints.
