Description

This is the second revised and enlarged edition of the classic synthesis of the history of Polish language by Aleksander Brückner (1856-1939), a prominent Slavist, historian of Polish literature and culture. The publication was published in 1913 in Lviv by the Society of Higher School Teachers as part of the series “Science and Art” (volume III).

Brückner, described as a “polyhistor”, a “titan of scientific work” and a “giant of Polish science”, in his work shows the development of the Polish language from the earliest times, through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, to the 19th century (the modern era). The author analyzes external influences (Latin, Czech, German), phonetic, morphological and syntactic processes, as well as the history of word-formation and the evolution of spelling . The work remains to this day a reference point in the study of the history of the Polish language.

The book has 190 pages, is enriched with 70 engravings in the text and two plates (including one fold-out, chromolithographic) – among them a likeness of a page of the Queen Sophia Bible.
