Description

One of the most evocative novels of the early period of the work of Leo Tolstoy – an author considered one of the greatest writers in the history of world literature. The work tells the story of a young Russian aristocrat Olenin, who, in search of the meaning of life, leaves civilization and ends up in the Caucasus, in a Cossack community. There he confronts his romantic notions of a simple, natural life with the reality of harsh nature, war and ambiguous human relations.

The central theme of the novel is the protagonist’s fascination with the world of the Cossacks and his affection for the beautiful Marianka, which becomes a symbol of his longing for authenticity and spiritual transformation. Tolstoy masterfully portrays the conflict between culture and nature, civilization and primitivism, selfishness and altruism, while creating a colorful picture of life on the frontier of the Russian Empire. The narrative combines psychological realism with poetic descriptions of the Caucasus landscape, which gives the novel a unique atmosphere.

The 1928 interwar Polish edition is an interesting example of the reception of Russian literature during the Second Polish Republic. The copy was bound in a noble, handmade leather binding in the bindery of the Polish Antiquarian, which emphasizes its representative character, prestige and ensures structural durability and conservation safety for generations of collector use.

The combination of classics of world literature and high-end bookbinding craftsmanship makes the copy attractive to collectors of Russian literature, Tolstoy lovers and those building elegant private libraries.
