“On Representative Government” (“Considerations on Representative Government,” 1861) is one of the classic works of political philosophy. In it, John Stuart Mill sets forth the principles of a liberal system and representative democracy: the criteria for good government, the principles of suffrage, and the threats facing representative government. The Polish translation was published in Kraków in 1866, at a time of keen interest in Mill’s thought in Poland; his writings were translated almost as they appeared during the era of Positivism.

An early Polish edition of a classic work of political thought.

A stamp on the frontispiece, title page, and last page.
