Moriz Carrière attempted to combine Christian theism with Hegel’s philosophy, presenting the history of art and literature as a process in which the spirit of humanity strives toward the ideals of freedom and harmony. The Polish edition includes an important supplement: an extensive “Overview of Polish Poetry in the 19th Century” by Piotr Chmielowski, who placed Polish Romanticism—with Mickiewicz and Słowacki—within the context of the European trends discussed by Carrière.

A resource for literary historians and scholars of Hegel’s reception in Poland.

Discoloration and stains; the front endpaper has a tear that has been taped.
