Volume 4 (1852) of *Szkoła Polska* (“Polish School”), the first Polish educational journal (1849–1853), published in Poznań by Ewaryst Estkowski, a teacher and social activist who almost single-handedly edited and distributed the journal. During the era of the Germanization of education in the Grand Duchy of Poznań, the journal served as a forum for the exchange of pedagogical ideas and the defense of the Polish language in schools. Estkowski wrote that “a nation will be what it is raised to be, and it is raised according to the teachers it has.” This volume contains essays on teaching methods, moral and physical education, as well as “Literary and Bibliographic News.” Estkowski died in 1856 at the age of 36.

On the title page and the page preceding the title page are a “Bachurski” stamp and a sticker reading “Bachurski in Płock”—the marks of this Płock family’s home library.
