About this copy

Karol Szajnocha, “Bolesław the Brave and the Rebirth of Poland Under Władysław Łokietek,” Lviv, 1859

(Published by Karol Wild; printed by E. Winiarz; second, corrected edition)

This volume contains two historical short stories by Karol Szajnocha: one about Bolesław the Brave and one about the rebirth of Poland under Władysław Łokietek; the text opens with the chapter “Mieczysław” and closes with “New Poland”. This is the second, revised edition, published in Lviv in 1859 by bookseller Karol Wild; *Bolesław the Brave* was first published in 1849.

Karol Szajnocha (1818–1868), born in Komarno near Sambor and died in Lviv, was one of the most important Polish historians of the 19th century. From 1853, he served as deputy curator at the Ossoliński National Institute. He suffered from eye problems for many years and completely lost his sight in 1860; he continued to work by dictating his writings. His most famous work is *Jadwiga and Jagiełło*. Szajnocha’s historical works served as an inspiration for, among others, Henryk Sienkiewicz and Jan Matejko.

This copy underwent conservation treatment at the Antykwariat Polski workshop. The book block was mechanically cleaned, and the sections were re-sewn by hand, restoring the volume’s structural stability.

A leather-bound volume handcrafted from the finest materials by master artisans at the Antykwariat Polski bookbindery. Natural leather, with a marbled paper endpaper.

The mission of Antykwariat Polski is based on a simple belief: valuable Polish books deserve to survive. Not as exhibits behind glass, but as living objects—preserved, bound with the utmost artisanal care, and ready for centuries to come in a collector’s library.
