The 1958 Warsaw edition, published by the Czytelnik publishing house, belongs to the early period of Marek Nowakowski’s work – one of the most important chroniclers of postwar urban reality in Poland. The collection of short stories, “This Old Thief,” represents an important stage in the formation of his distinctive narrative style, based on a realistic portrayal of the life of Warsaw’s peripheral communities and semi-literates.

The publication came out during the post-October thaw, a time of relative opening of literary life and greater thematic freedom. The early editions from the late 1950s, especially those published by the Reader, are of documentary significance for the history of postwar literature and the process of formation of a new generation of prose writers.
