Description

This is a monumental commemorative publication, published in 1929 by the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of its foundation (1579) and the 10th anniversary of its resurrection (1919). The publication is one of the most important sources for the history of one of the oldest and most distinguished Polish universities, whose traditions date back to the times of Stefan Batory and Piotr Skarga.

The work is divided into two extensive volumes. Volume I (436 pages) contains texts on the history of Vilnius University from its establishment in 1579, through the period of partitions and liquidation after the November Uprising (1832), to its resurrection in the reborn Republic of Poland in 1919 as Stefan Batory University. Volume II (638 pages) collects dissertations in the humanities, natural sciences and medical sciences, showcasing the university’s scientific achievements and profiles of outstanding professors, including Tadeusz Czeżowski (philosophy), Alfons Parczewski (law), Jozef Weyssenhoff (literature), Wladyslaw Dziewulski (astronomy) and many others.

The authors of the texts are the most prominent scholars of the era, associated with the Stefan Batory University – including its rectors, professors and alumni. The publication is not only a chronicle of the university’s history, but also a testimony to the highly developed Polish science in the interwar period, especially in the humanities, law and natural sciences. It also serves as an important document of Polish cultural heritage in the Vilnius region, a land that was outside Poland after World War II.
