Two accounts by eyewitnesses to history, bound together. Józef Tokarzewicz (pen name Hodi), a participant in the January Uprising, settled in Paris after the uprising’s defeat and edited Polish émigré publications there. He survived the siege of Paris in 1870 and the famine that gripped the city; “In the Days of War and Famine” is a literary account of those experiences. Victor Hugo’s “Things Seen 1848–1849” consists of the writer’s—then a deputy to the National Assembly—notes on the February Revolution, the June Days, and the decline of the Second Republic, written as events unfolded.

Both titles were published in Warsaw: *Rzeczy widziane* at the Drukarnia Dzieł Wyborowych printing house (1899), and *W dniach wojny i głodu* at A. T. Jezierski’s printing house (1900).

There is a faded owner’s signature on the endpaper. Period half-leather binding.

An item from the 18th Polish Antiquarian Book Auction.
