Description

We present an exceptionally rare work popularizing knowledge of seismic phenomena, published in the middle of the 19th century. The author, Jozef Sapalski (1815-1888), was a naturalist, popularizer of science, son of the eminent mathematician Franciszek Sapalski (the first Polish lecturer of descriptive geometry) .

The publication was published in 1850 by the Jozef Unger Printing House in Warsaw. Its content is an accessible discussion of the causes, mechanisms and effects of earthquakes, based on the state of geophysical knowledge in the mid-19th century. At the time of the dynamic development of geology and the first theories on the structure of the Earth, the book was part of the Enlightenment trend of popularizing science and natural sciences among Polish society under the partitions.
