About this copy

John Steinbeck’s “Tortilla Flat” was published in New York in 1935. It tells of Danny, his friends and his house, which, as the author says on the very first page, was like the legend of the Round Table. MGM filmed it in 1942 with Spencer Tracy and Hedy Lamarr. Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in 1962.

This is the first Polish edition, translated by Jan Zakrzewski and published by “Czytelnik” in November 1957 in 10,205 copies. The dust jacket and text illustrations are by Jan Młodożeniec (1929–2000), graphic artist and poster designer, a student of Henryk Tomaszewski. The original paper wrapper has been preserved in the binding.

A clean copy. We hand-bound the book in our bindery in antiqued black leather: raised bands with gilt title on the spine, blind-tooled covers, olive, gold and orange marbled endpapers with the label of the Antykwariat Polski bindery.
