GEORGES DUHAMEL: THE LIFE OF SALAVIN. VOLUMES I-II. [1971]

We present the first Polish edition of the novel cycle “Vie et aventures de Salavin” (“Life and adventures of Salavin”) by the outstanding French writer, Goncourt Prize winner (1918), member of the French Academy (1935) – Georges Duhamel (1884-1966). It was published in 1971 in Warsaw by the State Publishing Institute (PIW) in the prestigious “Novels of the 20th Century” series. It was translated from the French by Felicja Sniałecka, a respected translator of French literature.

Louis Salavin is considered a pioneering figure in European literature – the first anti-hero whose problems, fears and hopes are close to the modern reader. Figaro Littéraire included Confession de minuit in its list of the twelve best novels of the first half of the 20th century . Interestingly, Duhamel was not only a writer, but also a doctor – he served as a surgeon at the front during World War I, and his experiences during this period resulted in, among other things, the book Civilization, which won him the Goncourt Prize in 1918. Duhamel was also a staunch opponent of excessive industrialization and a critic of the Americanization of Europe, which he incorporated into his essays, including Scènes de la vie future (“Scenes from the Future Life”).

This is the first Polish edition – the absolute first printing of this series in Polish, belonging to the PIW “Novels of the Twentieth Century” series sought after by collectors. Complete copies are rare on the antiquarian market. This is a must-have for the collector of world literature, the lover of French prose and the bibliophile looking for a representative edition of the work of one of the most important French writers of the 20th century.
