Joh. Ludov. Gottfridi, *Historische Chronica, or A Description of the Most Notable Events* [1710]

Johann Ludwig Gottfried’s *Historische Chronica*, published by Matthäus Merian, recounts the history of the world from antiquity to modern times, with an emphasis on the political, religious, and military history of Europe. The chronicle was intended for the educated elite and adorned the prestigious libraries of the bourgeoisie and the nobility.

Large format, meticulous typesetting, and illustrated plates are the hallmarks of luxurious Baroque editions of historical chronicles.

A copy in a period parchment binding, with a stain on the front cover and losses in the corners. The edges of the title page have losses, reinforced in places with tissue paper; minor chipping of the corners on the first fifteen or so pages; traces of water damage in the margins of about twenty pages. The page containing pages 27/28 has been cut out and glued to the preceding page, protruding slightly beyond the block. The margins of the last two pages were reinforced with tissue paper during binding. Many pages show discoloration and minor soiling; the edges of the plates are reinforced in places. The block is preserved in its entirety, with all plates present.
