About this copy

Jan Potocki, “A Journey to Turkey and Egypt: With a Note on the Author’s Life and Writings by Żegota Paule,” Kraków, 1924

(published by the Book Lovers’ Society; foreword by Przecław Smolik; third edition; print run of 300 numbered copies)

Jan Potocki (1761–1815)—novelist, archaeologist, historian, ethnographer, and traveler; one of the most fascinating figures of the Polish Enlightenment; author of *The Manuscript Found in Saragossa*. “A Journey to Turkey and Egypt” is an account of an expedition undertaken in 1784, written in the form of letters to his mother —one of the earliest Polish literary accounts of a journey to the Middle East, part of the Enlightenment tradition of exploring the world.

The 1924 edition was prepared by the Kraków Society of Book Lovers, with a foreword by Przecław Smolik, in a print run of 300 numbered copies. The copy presented here is numbered 78/300. The text is preceded by a note on the life and writings of the author, Żegota Paule, who published the 1849 Kraków edition.

A clean copy, with the original paperback cover preserved inside the binding. It underwent conservation treatment at the Antykwariat Polski workshop. The book block was mechanically cleaned, and the sections were re-sewn by hand, restoring the volume’s structural stability.

A leather binding handcrafted from the finest materials by master craftsmen at the Antykwariat Polski bookbinding workshop. Natural leather.

The mission of Antykwariat Polski is based on a simple belief: valuable Polish books deserve to survive. Not as exhibits behind glass, but as living objects—preserved, bound with the utmost artisanal care, and ready for centuries to come in a collector’s library.
