Description

The 1957 Krakow edition, published by Wydawnictwo Literackie, is one of the most important postwar editions of Witold Gombrowicz’s prose in Poland. The edition was published during the 1956 thaw, at a time when the author’s work was gradually being restored to domestic publishing after years of marginalization and isolation in exile.

“Bakakay” covers Gombrowicz’s early short stories, which played a key role in shaping his original literary style and his later position in European literature. Today, the work of the author of “Ferdydurke” and “Trans-Atlantyk” belongs to the strict canon of 20th century literature, and the domestic editions of the 1950s are of significant documentary importance for the history of the reception of his work in Poland.

A complete copy (248, [4] p.), preserved in very good condition. An important collector’s value is the preservation of the original booklet covers, which is important for the publishing integrity and documentary value of the print.

The volume is bound in a handmade bibliophilic leather binding in the bindery of the Polish Antiquarian. Careful, classic binding gives the copy a representative character, raises its collector’s status, and ensures structural durability and storage safety in the long term.

Editions of Gombrowicz’s works from the 1950s, especially in good condition and with preserved booklet covers, remain an important segment of the collector’s market for postwar literature, combining historical significance with the author’s lasting place in the canon of world literature.
