About this copy

Size: 20 cm.

Binding: Period half-leather, with visible damage.

Narcyza Żmichowska’s letters are considered an integral part of her body of work: she wrote them with panache and literary awareness. The first two volumes were published in 1885 by Gebethner and Wolff, with an introduction by Piotr Chmielowski. The third volume appeared in 1906 as a supplement to the edition. It contains letters that were not included in the first volumes, including those to her brother Erazm and her closest friends. They are full of warmth and emotion, and discuss the author’s educational views, the “Entuzjastki” circle, and her daily life. Żmichowska was a women’s rights activist and, from 1849 to 1852, a prisoner of the tsar.

On the title page, there is a stamp that reads “From the Library of Tomasz Kornatowski.”

The title page is soiled; there are marks in the text. The original period half-leather binding is damaged.

An item from the 18th Polish Antiquarian Book Auction.
