John Stuart Mill’s *The Subjection of Women*, published in English in 1869, is one of the classic texts of emancipatory thought. Mill describes the legal and social subordination of women as a remnant of the old order, contrary to the principles of freedom and justice. He emphasized the intellectual contributions of his wife, Harriet Taylor Mill (1807–1858). As a Member of Parliament for Westminster, on May 20, 1867, he introduced an amendment in the House of Commons to replace the word “man” with “person” in the electoral law, which would have granted women the right to vote. The amendment failed, but it received 73 votes in favor.

This is the second edition of the Polish translation, published in Kraków in 1887, featuring a plate with a portrait of the author. It was translated by M. Chyżyńska.
