Coloniae (Cologne) 1526, Printed by Eucharius Ceruicornus for Godefrido Hittorpio
30 cm, [12] pp., 202 pp., [13] pp.
A Renaissance edition of the classic work by Aulus Gellius (c. 125 – after 180 CE), a Roman writer and grammarian best known for *Noctes Atticae* (“Attic Nights”). It is a collection of observations and anecdotes on literature, philosophy, law, and language, compiled on the basis of extensive reading and conversations held, among other times, during winter nights in Attica. During the Renaissance, the *Noctes Atticae* were among the most highly regarded sources of knowledge about ancient culture and became part of the humanists’ required reading.
The 1526 edition was published by the Cologne-based printing house of Eucharius Cervicornus, under the direction of Gottfried Hittorp, a renowned Cologne publisher, during a period of intense growth in the publication of classical Latin texts. It is notable, among other things, for its rich woodcut initials and meticulous Latin typesetting.
A copy bound in period parchment. Visible discoloration and minor signs of wear, typical of 16th-century prints. The text is legible, with no significant losses affecting the integrity of the work; the binding is in a condition appropriate for its age, with signs of historical use.
