Description

We present the first edition of Arkady Fiedler’s account of his first great expedition to southern Brazil, which took place in 1928-1929. The book was published in 1932 by Jachowski University Bookstore in Poznan.

Arkady Fiedler (1894-1985), traveler, reporter and naturalist, set out for Brazil at the age of 34, following the success of his debut book “Through the Whirlpools and Porohs of the Dniester” (1926). The expedition was his first major trip – the destination was the state of Parana in southern Brazil, where Polish emigrants were settling in large numbers at the time. From the expedition he brought back rich zoological and botanical collections, which he selflessly donated to the Natural History Museum in Poznan, the University of Poznan, the Poznan Palm House and the Zoological Garden. He described his impressions in two books: “Bichos, my Brazilian friends” (1931) and just “Among the Koroad Indians” (1932).

The Koroad Indians of the title are one of the tribes living in southern Brazil that Fiedler encountered during his expedition. This book, like the later “Fish Sing in Ukajala” (1935) and “Canada Smelling of Resin” (1936), brought the author fame and allowed him to finance further trips. In 1936, Fiedler received the Literary Award of the City of Poznań and the Silver Laurel of the Polish Academy of Literature for his work.

This is the first edition – the absolute first printing of this book. A copy in an exclusive bibliophile binding, handmade by the Polish Antiquarian Bookbindery. It appears sporadically on the antiquarian market. This is a must-have item for a collector of travel literature, an admirer of Fiedler’s work and anyone who wants to learn about the beginnings of the great career of one of the most outstanding Polish travelers of the 20th century.
