Warsaw 1771, by Michał Gröll, J.K.Mci Bibliopoli y Kommissarz Nadwornego

The Warsaw edition of 1771, published in the outhouse of Michał Gröll – one of the most important printers and booksellers of the Stanislaus era – is an example of the Polish reception of European moral and political literature of the 18th century. The translation, made by Father Samuel Chrościkowski, a Piarist, is part of the trend of educational and intellectual reforms of the religious circles that co-created the program of state renewal in the pre-partition period.

The work is noted in Karol Estreicher’s “Bibliografia Polska” (18th century section), which confirms its place in the basic canon of prints of the Polish Enlightenment. Gröll’s publishers are among the most recognizable and respected Warsaw outlets of the second half of the 18th century, and their prints constitute a permanent segment of the market for old investment prints.

A complete copy (XXXII, 268 pp.), preserved in very good condition. Paper clean, with occasional minor pale discoloration on the edges of a dozen pages – typical of 18th century handmade paper.

The volume is bound in a handmade bibliophilic leather binding in the bindery of the Polish Antiquarian. The classic, sturdy binding construction ensures long-term protection of the book block and enhances the collector’s prestige of the copy, making it suitable for representative private and institutional collections.

Warsaw prints from the 1870s, especially those with political and moral themes, belong to a stable segment of the Polish old-print market. The combination of historical significance, bibliographic confirmation and high state of preservation makes the present copy an object of clear investment rank within the Stanislawski literature.
