Description

“Historje Lwowskie” is a collection of storytelling and short stories devoted to the history and customs of old Lviv, written by the prominent writer and popularizer of history, Stanislaw Wasylewski (1885-1953). Published in 1921 by the Polish Publishing House in Lviv, the work appeared just after Poland regained its independence and the end of the fighting for Lviv, becoming a tribute to the city that had returned to the Motherland.

Wasylewski, a historian by training and a chronicler by avocation, draws a colorful picture of Lviv from the 18th and 19th centuries with extraordinary flair and erudition. He brings the reader closer to forgotten characters, old customs, social scandals, everyday life of Lviv tenements and cafes, as well as tragic moments in the city’s history. His style – artful, witty, full of anecdotes – makes the book read like a passionate story. It is not only a valuable source of knowledge about the history of Lviv, but also a testimony of the author’s love for this extraordinary city, which played a key role in Polish culture.
