Description

“After the Grain” is a rare and valuable commemorative collection published in Vilnius in 1861 through the efforts of two prominent cultural activists and historians – Maurycy Krupowicz and Jan Prusinowski . The publication appeared on the eve of the outbreak of the January Uprising, constituting an important document of Polish patriotic and literary thought in Lithuania in the period leading up to the national uprising.

Maurycy Krupovich (1823-1891) was a historian, archivist and secretary of the archaeological commission in Vilnius, a researcher of Lithuanian history and collaborator in the scientific circles of Vilnius and Dorpat . Jan Prusinowski – a writer, columnist and social activist – together with Krupowicz gathered in this volume diverse material: historical articles, essays, poetry and memoirs, creating a peculiar anthology of Polish borderland thought.

The collection, whose title alludes to the proverb “after the grain gathers measure,” was intended – as one might assume – to promote knowledge of Polish history and culture in Lithuania and to strengthen patriotic ties in the face of growing tsarist repression. The publication contains works and texts by authors associated with the literary and scientific community of Vilnius at the time
