Description
This is the first Polish edition of a luxury album devoted to the Rococo era in the history of French culture. The author, Max von Boehn (1850-1932), was a German historian of culture and art, author of numerous works devoted to the history of customs, fashion and decorative arts. The book was published in 1932 by the Warsaw publishing house of Trzaska, Evert and Michalski, translated by Pawel Hulki-Laskowski (1881-1946), an outstanding translator and publicist.
The work is a panoramic presentation of 18th-century France – from the Regency era (1715-1723) through the era of Louis XV and the Marquise de Pompadour, to the reign of Louis XVI and the outbreak of the French Revolution. Boehn analyzes not only art (paintings by Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard; interior architecture; sculpture; handicrafts), but also customs, fashion, court and salon life, literature, philosophy and religiosity of the era. It is a work that combines historical erudition with a wealth of iconographic material.
The presented copy is numbered (No. 639). The publication, published on chalk paper, contains 300 engravings in the text and 15 color plates – illustrating works of art, costume, interiors, furniture, porcelain and other applied art objects of the period. It is a real feast for the eye and an extremely valuable source of knowledge for art and cultural historians, costume scholars and all lovers of the French 18th century.
The elegant leather binding, handcrafted by the Polish Antiquarian Bindery, gives this publication a unique character and durability
