About this copy

Size: 22 cm.

Volume: Vol. I: 324 pp.; Vol. II: 397 pp., with two fold-out lithographed historical maps (Poland in 1492 and in 1772).

Binding: period half-leather; both volumes show cracks in the block and along the spine.

“A Brief History of Poland” by Michał Bobrzyński, a leading historian of the Kraków School, sparked widespread debate. Bobrzyński sought the causes of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth’s collapse primarily within the country itself: in the anarchy of the magnates, the paralysis of the Sejm, the nobility’s aversion to taxes, and the weakness of royal authority. Volume I covers history up to the end of the 15th century, with a map of Poland in 1492; Volume II leads up to the Partitions, with a map of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1772.

The signature “Z. Witwiński” appears on the half-titles of both volumes.

Cracks along the joints; stains on several pages.

An item from the 18th Polish Antiquarian Book Auction.
