The first volume of F. A. Brockhaus’s Leipzig-based “Library of Polish Writers,” a series published between 1863 and 1901. It opened with the poetry of Stefan Garczyński, a participant in the November Uprising and a friend of Adam Mickiewicz. The volume was published in the year the January Uprising broke out. It includes, among other works, “The History of Wacław,” a philosophical poem by Garczyński that Mickiewicz valued highly and, after his friend’s death, published with his own introduction. Garczyński’s account of the defense of Redoubt No. 54 during the assault on Warsaw in 1831 served as the basis for Mickiewicz’s “Reduta Ordona.” Garczyński died of tuberculosis in Avignon at the age of 28.
