The fourth volume of *Selected Writings of J. I. Kraszewski* in the 1878 “Jubilee Edition,” prepared to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the writer’s career; the proceeds were donated to the honoree, who was living in Dresden. The volume contains the first part of the novel *Jasełka: An Excerpt from the Memoirs of Ktosia*, written in the form of a diary by an anonymous narrator. It is an ironic portrayal of the life of the old nobility, with its customs and weaknesses. The title refers to Christmas plays and serves as a metaphor for the everyday “theater” of provincial life. The second part appeared in Volume V.

On the title page, there is a stamp that reads “Stanisław Gorazdowski in Siedlce.”
