“Kenilworth” (1821) is one of the best-known novels by Walter Scott, the founder of the modern historical novel. The story is set in England during the reign of Elizabeth I. At its center is Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, the queen’s favorite, who has secretly married Amy Robsart and is hiding this fact from the court. Kenilworth Castle, Dudley’s residence, is the setting for grand celebrations in honor of the queen and, at the same time, for the drama that leads to a tragic end. Based on the novel, Donizetti composed the opera *Il castello di Kenilworth* (1829), and its scenes were painted by Bonington and Delacroix. The first Polish translation was published in Warsaw in 1828.

The 1874 edition, published by Salomon Lewental and prepared by the editorial staff of *Kłosy*.
