About this copy

Year of publication: 1929. Series: Builders of the World.

Size: 20 cm

Number of pages: 240.

Binding: Period half-leather with gilt lettering on the spine.

Emil Ludwig, born in Wrocław as Emil Cohn and known for his biographies of Goethe, Bismarck, and Napoleon, recounts in this book the life of Jesus of Nazareth as a historical figure, without any theological interpretation. He treats the Gospels like any other historical source and focuses on the psychology of the protagonist and his surroundings. The original German edition from 1928 sparked a lively debate and quickly sold in large numbers.

The Polish edition was published as early as 1929, translated by Paweł Hulka-Laskowski, a writer and translator who contributed to *Wiadomości Literackie*, among other publications, and who also wrote the introduction. The cover of the paperback edition was designed by Karol Hiller (1891–1939), a representative of the Polish Constructivist avant-garde and a pioneer of heliography.

Features a bookplate by Wojciech Dominikowski on the endpaper. A complete and clean copy, in a period half-leather binding.

An item from the 18th Polish Antiquarian Book Auction.
