About this copy

Title: On Aristotle’s Principle of Contradiction: A Critical Study.

Author: Jan ŁUKASIEWICZ (1878–1956) [Polish logician and philosopher, founder of multi-valued logic, one of the principal founders of the Lviv-Warsaw School, who introduced mathematical logic to Poland]

Publisher: Academy of Arts and Sciences, W. Osławski Publishing Fund, Kraków

Year of publication: 1910. First edition.

Volume: [4], 210, [2] pp.

Size: 20 cm.

Łukasiewicz’s first independent book and one of his most important early works. Storrs McCall described it as the first attempt to “open up perspectives in logic comparable to those opened up in geometry by the introduction of non-Euclidean systems.” The study marked a turning point in the development of the Lviv-Warsaw School: In it, Łukasiewicz systematically challenged the assumptions of traditional Aristotelian logic for the first time, and he included an appendix with a lecture on symbolic logic based on Couturat’s textbook. Today, the work is considered a rarity on the international antiquarian book market.

Provenance: On the title page and subsequent pages, there are stamps reading “Philosophical Seminary of the University of Lviv” and a stamp in Cyrillic reading “canceled.”

The first edition of a seminal early work by the founder of multi-valued logic—a must-read for historians of philosophy and formal logic.

A rarity on the market.
