About this copy

Infortiati Digestvm Novum, with new additions: corrected with emendations in both the text and the glosses, and illustrated with new commentaries.

Lugduni (Lyon) 1550, Printed by Ad Salamandrae, at the Sennetonios Brothers’ Press

26 cm, 1,388 pp., 1 plate.

A volume of the Renaissance edition of the Digests with glosses—part of the *Corpus iuris civilis*, the monumental collection of Roman law codified under Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century. The Digests were the subject of intensive legal study in the Middle Ages and the early modern period, and Renaissance editions, such as this one from 1550, were used by universities and law schools throughout Europe.

This copy comes from the Senneton brothers’ printing house in Lyon, which operated under the emblem of the salamander (Ad Salamandrae)—one of the most renowned printers of legal and academic texts during the Renaissance.

A copy in its original period parchment binding, preserved in generally good condition, considering its age.

Pages with visible discoloration and water stains of varying intensity, typical of 16th-century legal prints on porous paper. The text is legible and complete, with no omissions that compromise its integrity; signs of wear and changes in the paper’s color do not hinder reading.

Mid-16th-century editions of the *Corpus iuris civilis* rarely appear on the antiquarian book market.
