First edition of source excerpts from the history of Polish culture – from the earliest times to the author’s contemporaries – accompanied by engravings. The publication was published in 1938 by the State Publishing House of School Books in Lviv, a year before the outbreak of World War II. It counts 349, [6] pages.
The author is Prof. Kazimierz Jan Hartleb (1886-1951) – a cultural historian, professor at Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv (since 1929) and Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun (since 1945), member of the correspondent of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (1951). His main scientific works include “The Library of Sigismund Augustus” (1928) and “Nicolaus Copernicus” (1946). The textbook was approved for school use by the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment in 1938.
Hartleb was one of the most prominent representatives of the Lviv historical community of the interwar period. During the German occupation (1941-1944) he taught secretly at the underground Jan Kazimierz University, promoted 5 PhDs and 11 MAs, and headed the archives of the Union of Armed Struggle-Home Army (ZWZ-AK) in the Lviv area. Forced to leave Lviv after the war, he co-founded the Faculty of Humanities at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, serving as dean in the 1947/1948 academic year. A clean copy, preserved in good condition. It was bound by hand in an exclusive binding made of natural leather by the Polish Antiquarian Bindery.
