Description

This is the first edition of one of the most important psychological and moral novels by Stefan Zeromski (1864-1925), published in 1912 by the Kraków-based “Książka” publishing company. It was a book that, due to its patriotic and anti-Tsarist message, could only be published outside the reach of Russian censorship, in autonomous Galicia.

The work depicts the fate of Piotr Rozlucki – a Russian army officer raised in the spirit of loyalty to the Tsar, who after discovering the tragic story of his father – a January uprising insurgent killed by the Russians – begins to question his previous values and feel deep moral and national dilemmas. Żeromski shows his transformation of consciousness, the conflict between personal happiness (love for the beautiful Russian woman Tatiana) and duty to the nation, as well as the difficult life choices facing the protagonist . The novel combines an interesting historical and social background with a deep insight into the psyche of the protagonist and his struggle for the meaning of life and identity – this motif becomes the axis of the narrative on which Żeromski builds a rich panorama of human dilemmas and values.
