Description

A monumental commemorative book published on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the restoration of the Jagiellonian University by King Władysław Jagiełło in 1400. The publication was published in 1901 by the Jagiellonian University Printing House in Cracow under the management of Józef Filipowski .

The volume is an extremely valuable source for the history of one of the oldest universities in Europe. It contains, among other things, an introductory word by L. Cyfrowicz, detailed descriptions of the history of the founding and renewal of the University, preparations for the jubilee and the course of the celebrations that took place on June 7, 1900 . The publication is richly illustrated – it includes engravings in the text and a portrait of rector Stanislaw Tarnowski in heliogravure .

The book is not only a historical document, but also a testimony to the patriotic spirit of Poles under the partitions – the jubilee celebration became a magnificent manifestation of national unity and recognition of the five centuries of civilization work of Polish science . The celebration was attended by representatives of sister universities from around the world, which emphasized the importance of this moment for Polish culture and science.
