FLORJAN BOBROWSKI: LATIN-POLISH DICTIONARY. VOLUME I-II [1903].

Description

This is the third revised and supplemented edition (editio princeps 1822) of one of the most important works of Polish lexicography of the 19th century – the most extensive and accurate Latin-Polish dictionary at the time . The author, Fr. Florjan Bobrowski (1777-1846), a Jesuit, classical philologist educated in Polotsk, librarian of the Polotsk Academy, and from 1822 parish priest in Niemenczyn, created a work that, following the example of the dictionary of Jacob Facciolati, was an invaluable aid to Polish philologists and students .

The dictionary was published in Vilnius by and printed by Jozef Zawadzki – one of the oldest and most distinguished publishing houses in the Polish lands. Volume I (A-K) has 2014 pages in double-spaced pagination, volume II (L-Z) – 2007 pages. According to the preface to the third edition: “Bobrowski’s peculiar and abundant Polish language, rich in archaisms and provincialisms, remained, as a property of the author, almost untouched; only the modern spelling was introduced, instead of the obsolete one.” Volume II also contains a Calendar of Ancient Romans, an Index of Latin writers cited in the dictionary, and an Explanation of Characters and Abbreviated Words .

This publication is not only an indispensable tool for classical philologists, historians of antiquity and translators, but also a testimony to the high level of Polish lexicographical thought during the partition period, when the Polish language was subjected to Russification pressures.
