Description

This is a fundamental work by one of the most eminent Polish mathematicians – Waclaw Sierpinski (1882-1969), professor at the University of Warsaw, member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and an actual member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, world-renowned founder of the Lviv-Warsaw school of mathematics. The publication was published in 1946 by the Faculty of Sciences of the Ministry in Warsaw, as part of the prestigious series “Mathematical Monographs.”

The book is a systematic lecture on higher algebra at the university level, covering topics such as the theory of complex numbers, determinants, algebraic equations, Galois theory, and elements of group theory. Complementing the work is “Outline of Galois Theory” by Associate Professor Dr. Andrzej Mostowski, an eminent mathematician and logician, member of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

The presented copy has a special collector’s value – it is a numbered copy (number 1553), with the original booklet cover preserved. The signature on the title page attests to its provenance. The publication, published in the first years after the end of World War II, is a testimony to the rebirth of Polish science after the years of occupation and is a must-have item for historians of mathematics, collectors of Polish scientific prints and anyone interested in the achievements of the Polish school of mathematics.
