Description

This is the first volume of a monumental two-volume publication published in 1938 to mark the upcoming 400th anniversary of the establishment of Warsaw as the capital of Poland. The collective work, edited by Stanisława Sempołowska – an outstanding educator, social and educational activist – was created through the efforts of several major Polish publishing houses of the interwar period: “Nasza Księgarnia,” the Polish Teachers’ Union, the “Rój” Publishing Society and the J. Mortkowicz Publishing House.

Volume one is devoted to the history of Warsaw from the earliest times to the 19th century, with a special focus on the urban development, architecture, culture and social life of the capital. The authors of the individual chapters are prominent historians, architects and varsavianists of the era, who bring the reader closer to the history of the city on the Vistula River in an accessible yet erudite manner.

The publication, richly illustrated with numerous reproductions of works of art, archival photographs, maps and plans, is an extremely valuable source of knowledge about interwar Warsaw and its image shaped over the centuries. It is a must-have item for varsavianists, art historians, researchers of Polish history and all lovers of the capital.
