Description

A unique 19th-century reissue of one of Nicolaus Rej’s most fractious works, originally published in print in 1565. This publication, published in Paris in 1876, is a faithful rendering of the Old Polish commentary on St. John’s Revelation, in which the “father of Polish literature” interprets the biblical visions in a highly colorful and emotional manner, setting them in the context of the religious and moral struggles of the 16th century.

Apocalypsis is not only a theological treatise in the spirit of the Reformation, but above all a monument to the Polish language. Using luscious, artistic phrasing, Rej creates a work that still amazes today with its power of expression and literary inventiveness. The Paris edition from the period of the Great Emigration (often realized through the efforts of bibliophiles concerned with preserving national heritage) is a rarity on the antiquarian market and is an extremely valuable acquisition for collectors of Old Polish and religious literature.

A copy in a luxurious full leather binding from the bindery of the Polish Antiquarian.
