First Polish edition illustrated with lithographs of “Spiewy historyczne” by Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz (1757-1841) poet, playwright, one of the leading authors of the Polish Enlightenment.
“Śpiewy historyczne” was his most famous work and one of the most popular Polish books of the 19th century. They were written on the order of the Society of Friends of Science.
In 33 poetic songs Niemcewicz presented the most important moments and figures of Polish history. Each song is accompanied by a scoreboard and a lithograph (by K. Auer, among others) made in the lithographic workshops of M. Jablonski in Lviv and A. Witeka in Prague.

Discoloration and moisture stains on a dozen cards. Pre-title card narrower than the block, traces of repairs to 3 pages of notes, paper loss of one page with list of publisher’s printed matter supplemented with a strip of paper, corners of 2 pages supplemented with paper. First k. of notes trimmed with minimal damage to text. Note cards have been placed at the end of the book.

Full brown leather. Decorative embossing on spine fields, covers and edges. Gilding on the corners. Gilded titlepage on leather escutcheon. The lining and edges of the pages hand-marbled.
